The Matildas have beaten the United States for the first time ever, with a 1-0 win in their opening game at the Tournament of Nations in Seattle.
The defending world champion US — the current world-number-one-ranked team — had never lost to Australia in 26 years.
The home side dominated early, as the Matildas struggled to contain the Americans in attack, and found it difficult to get the ball forward of halfway.
They gradually got into the game, however, and having made it to half-time at 0-0, they started exerting more and more pressure.
The Australians were rewarded in the 67th minute, when Tameka Butt ran onto a through ball and her strike hit the back of the net past US goalie Alyssa Naeher.
The home side tried hard to get the equaliser, but the Matildas held on for a historic victory.
Earlier Brazil and Japan had drawn 1-1 in the first game of the four-team tournament.
More to come.
