NEW YORK _ Mathew Barzal had two goals and an assist, John Tavares scored twice and Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and two assists as the Islanders survived a third-period rally and prevented the Flyers from being able to clinch a playoff berth with a 5-4 win on Tuesday night at Barclays Center.
Thomas Greiss made 27 saves for the Islanders (33-37-10), who are still just 4-12-4 since Feb. 19 and will miss the playoffs for the second straight season. Petr Mrazek stopped 32 shots for the Flyers (40-27-14), who had a 5-0-3 streak snapped.
Nolan Patrick, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft, scored two third-period power-play goals in a little over four minutes to cut the Islanders' lead to 4-3 at 8:16. Claude Giroux tied the game at 13:04, but Barzal scored the winner just 28 seconds later.
Barzal became the first Islanders' rookie to reach 80 points since 1977-78 when Mike Bossy had 91 on 53 goals and 38 assists. Barzal, a likely candidate to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie and who confirmed earlier on Tuesday he will play for Team Canada in the World Championships in Denmark May 4-20, now has 22 goals and 60 assists.
He set up Tavares' power-play goal that gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 7:15 of the first period. Wayne Simmonds tied the game at 1 with 52.4 seconds left before the first intermission.
But the Islanders scored three times in the second period to seemingly take control. Beauvillier skated across the zone and beat Mrazek over his blocker for a 2-1 lead at 3:43, giving him 20 goals this season.
Tavares took Josh Bailey's feed to the crease for a 3-1 lead at 11:06 and Barzal connected from the right circle at 16:27.
