Matheus Cunha said he believes Michael Carrick deserves to be appointed manager of Manchester United and said he is bringing the magic of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign to the current squad.

Cunha scored the opening goal in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, which guaranteed United’s place in next season’s Champions League and took their record under Carrick to 10 victories and just two defeats in 14 games.

The club are set to make a decision on Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season but Cunha has joined some of his teammates in giving Carrick his backing.

He said: “I don't think it's in my hands. But what he did, he's full of confidence in the group. How he teaches everyone is amazing. I think he has the magic with like these Ferguson times, these kinds of things, then he comes and brings [it] to us. Teach us how it was, and to be part of everything, then he did this, it's amazing, he's a pleasure, and then of course I think he deserves it.”

Cunha believes the Champions League will benefit from United’s presence after saying it is a lesser competition without them.

He added: “It's one of the biggest privilege I have to play at this club and we know the goal of the season is to be there. I think Champions League without this club is not the same competition, and this club without Champions League is not same club. When we come in, I think there were a lot of doubts about how the club will come back. I'm so happy to be part of this.”

Cunha carried on his habit of scoring in high-profile matches, after also finding the net against Arsenal and Chelsea, and said his friends always tip him to find the net on such occasions.

He explained: “These kind of games are a dream to play and then score in this kinds of games... My friends play these kind of games with me every single time. They say, 'I need to bet on you because you love this' and I said, ‘Don't bet, please!’ But I feel like I'm so happy to be part of these games as an important player.”
