Mateusz Klich remaining defiant as Leeds United await coronavirus shutdown updates

Midfielder Mateusz Klich says the cancellation of the season would be "unfair" on Leeds United - and that the players want to finish the job they started.

The EFL, and indeed the elite game in England, has been plunged into uncertainty following the coronavirus outbreak.

There will be no games played until at least April 3, when Leeds are scheduled to travel to Blackburn Rovers.

However, that resumption date is looking increasingly unlikely given the scale of the outbreak and the self-isolation measures being taken in the UK.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are currently top of the Championship with just nine games of the regular season left to play.

“It would be strange if it turned out that we were playing for nothing," Klich said.

"We are seven points ahead of the play-off zone with nine matches to go (this season).

“We are very close to the Premier League.

"The cancellation of this season would be unfair in this case. I hope this won’t happen.”

Klich was also affected by the suspension of this summer's European Championship.

The Polish international was hoping to be part of the tournament, which is being staged in a number of countries, but earlier this week it was shelved until 2021.

Speaking to WP Sportowe Fakty, the 19-cap midfielder added: "The Euros hasn’t even started. We don’t know all the opponents yet.

"This is not surprising for me; I expected the championship to be postponed.

“In my opinion, it is more important to finish the league games.

"I strongly hope that we will manage to finish the season.

"Before the official decision to suspend the Championship, the entire team wanted to continue playing."

An EFL meeting was scheduled to place via conference call on Wednesday morning.
