Mateusz Klich pinpoints one issue Leeds United need to sort out if they are going to go up

Mateusz Klich believes an inability to finish chances is what cost Leeds United promotion last season, but is encouraged they are improving in that regard.

The Polish international scored twice in the Whites’ 4-0 thrashing of Middlesbrough on Saturday, a result which capped off a prolific November.

The Whites won five games out of five in November, scoring more than one goal in four of those wins while maintaining their strong defensive record with just two goals conceded.

That’s 11 goals from the last five games. In the previous 11 Championship games, Leeds scored 11 goals, scoring more than once just twice.

“I hope so because we needed goals and we had a lot of chances and we couldn’t find the net,” Klich said when asked whether Leeds had cracked their finishing problem.

“Today we scored more. I hope there’s going to be more goals, because we still had more chances than four today, but yes three points is three points.”

Defensively, there are few concerns. Leeds boast the best record in the division with just 10 goals conceded from 19 games, keeping three more clean sheets than any other side.

If Leeds can maintain their current goalscoring form, there’s a balance to the side which will be difficult to stop.

Klich also believes a lack of clinicality is what cost Leeds promotion in the final weeks of last season, with vital points cost in defeats to Sheffield United, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Brentford - four games in which Leeds only scored once.

“We needed to score more goals, we had chances, and we have to score more goals,” he added, asked if Leeds had learned any lessons from last season’s near-miss.

“That’s the only thing because we’re dominating almost every game and we had a lot of possession and a lot of chances. We need to score goals.

“Because we’re playing better than almost every team. Sometimes the opponent has two chances and scores two goals, and we had 12 chances and we can’t score, so that’s the only thing.”
