Maternity hospital's handy childbirth guide measures dilation using EASTER EGGS

Women's bodies truly are incredible things. They have many ways of signalling it's nearly time to bring new life into this world.

There are the painful contractions.

For some expectant mothers - or all, according to every soap opera ever made - it's the water breaking.

But there's only one way to know for sure baby's on the way.

When your cervix reaches Cadbury's classic purple foil-wrapped Easter egg dilation stage - it's time to start pushing.

That's according to a helpful chart from the Royal Devon and Exeter Maternity Services.

Its chart posted on Facebook charts the crucial stages of dilation in childbirth as measured by popular Easter eggs.

Here's the handy chart (Kalma Baby HQ)

At 2cm - or Lindt egg - it's really too soon.

By 7cm- the Milkybar egg - you better start picking baby names.

But by 10cm, the cervix dilation stage midwives and obstetricians watch for to mark the time labour is ready to begin - and apparently also the circumference of a chocolate Cadbury Easter Egg - it is time.

With Easter just around the corner, the maternity hospital's social media manager appears to be hopping cheerily into the holiday season.

The hospital's "Eggstraordinary Cervix" chart shared on Facebook prompted thousands of shares and comments.

Some loved it. One commenter announced she was both "traumatised and peckish" at the thought.

Some mums-to-be sniffed that the only chart they had time for during labour was one laying down a rule they must be rewarded with ever-larger chocolate eggs at each stage of dilation.

But for others, the comparison between chocolate and the cervix was too much to bear.

"I feel like this could put me off Easter Eggs for life," wrote Sarah Hodder.
