Mater Hospital among top five worst in Ireland as July 2019 busiest ever for patients on trolleys

There were more patients waiting on Irish hospital beds this July than any other in recorded history.

The Mater Hospital was among the top five busiest hospitals in the country.

There were 560 patients waiting on beds throughout the month with 9,439 recorded across the country.

There has been an increase of 33% since July 2018, and there are almost 6,000 more patients on trolleys in July then when figures started in 2006.

In Dublin, there were 2,047 people on trolleys last month. Tallaght was the second highest in the capital with 557.

That was followed by St Vincent's (423), Connolly (262) and Beaumont (105).

INMO Director of Industrial Relations, Tony Fitzpatrick said: “Each day there are hundreds of patients languishing in corridors, waiting for a hospital bed. Currently over 700 patients cannot be discharged from hospital.

"In the meantime, hundreds of frontline nursing and midwifery posts are currently vacant due to the HSE’s dysfunctional and bureaucratic employment control processes.

“Vital roles across all services, at all grades, in all hospitals are left unfilled. This has direct negative consequences for patients.

“We expect increased demands on the health service in winter, but now even summer sees patients crammed into corridors on trolleys. It is creating unacceptable risks for patients and health workers alike.”

Tadhg Daly, Nursing Homes Ireland CEO added: “Over half of those awaiting discharge from our acute hospitals are awaiting transition to nursing home care.

It is vital for our health services that the Government addresses with urgency the constraints being imposed upon Fair Deal funding approvals and appropriately resources the scheme to meet demand to year-end.”
