Mateo Kovacic role, Billy Gilmour involved - Things we learned in Chelsea training

Chelsea take on Rennes tomorrow night in the Champions League in another game with a quick turnaround.

It’s a very busy period for the Blues as they have several games back to back and take on Sheffield United at the weekend.

With all the matches it means that there has been little time for training in between and to work on set things.

However, the Blues had their final session before the match and here are some of the things we learned from the game.

Mateo Kovacic

After being the club’s player of the year last season, it has been a strange 2020/21 campaign for the Croatian so far.

The 26-year-old has started just twice in the Premier League and once in the Champions League.

Kovacic was not in the matchday squad for Saturday’s win over Burnley and his omission has been noticed by supporters.

The Croatian was in training ahead of tomorrow night’s match, but the role he might play in the starting XI is yet to be seen.

Billy Gilmour involved

It has been a frustrating start to the season for Billy Gilmour has he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered at the end of the previous campaign.

The 19-year-old had surgery on the injury and he has been recovering well, and is back on track to return this month.

The young Scot was involved in first team training once again ahead of the Champions League game, another encouraging step.

Azpilicueta all smiles

Cesar Azpilicueta also has had a difficult start to the season, not making as many appearances as he would usually do.

With the emergence of Reece James, Azpilicueta has started just three Premier League matches and another two off the bench.

The 31-year-old still has a big role to play in the side, however, as club captain and helping the side progress.

Azpilicueta was all smiles in the session as he posed with N’Golo Kante.
