Match worn Sunderland shirts auctioned to raise money for The Royal British Legion

Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Mansfield Town in the FA Cup may have been a moment to forget for Black Cats fans.

Ahead of kick-off, both sides held a minute's silence to mark Armistice Day on November 11th with all players wearing shirts bearing a poppy as a mark of respect, and you can now bid on one to help raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

So far Black Cats shirts have raised £3198 with Chris Maguire the highest at £448.

There are 18 shirts up for grabs, Will Grigg's is currently at £306, Charlie Wyke at £219 and Max Power at £173.

Bidding runs until November 27, ending at 8pm.

All the shirts have been worn against Mansfield Town and been signed by the players. The shirts have been disinfected with UV-C technology, killing any virus, bacteria and DNA traces but maintains the match-worn elements and signatures - making the shirt Covid safe.

The proceeds raised go to the Royal British Legion and this year's poppy appeal.

Claire Rowcliffe, Director of Fundraising at The Royal British Legion said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has had an overwhelming impact on people’s livelihoods and way of life, leaving some in the Armed Forces community in dire need of urgent help and support.

“We are extremely grateful for the support the EFL clubs and the football community show the Poppy Appeal every year.

"The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support, and this year we need that support more than ever, so we can ensure that those who have served and sacrificed on our behalf are looked after. Every poppy counts.”
