Match of the Day verdict: Why Newcastle United can consider themselves lucky

The Match of the Day pundits agreed that Newcastle United were fortunate to earn their first home point of the season.

Newcastle were good value for a share of the spoils against the Hornets on the balance of play but there was a real bone of contention in United’s leveller, which hit Isaac Hayden’s hand in the run up to Fabian Schar’s goal.

Under new laws, VAR should have intervened and ruled the goal out. “I think they could consider themselves very unfortunate. Dawson’s header drops down onto Isaac Hayden’s hand and goes to Fabian Schar who sticks it in the back of the net,” Jenas said. “VAR must have had a day off.”

“The new law says that even if it’s not deliberate (if it hits your hand) it should be a foul,” Lineker concurred.

Newcastle’s endeavour saw them recover from Will Hughes’ opener but by the law of the game, they did get away with it – however harsh it would have been on the Magpies.

Cahill said: “It’s same the Laporte. Watford should be going home with three points.”
