Match of the Day pundits in total agreement over Arsenal penalty decision against Tottenham

Match of the Day pundits Jermaine Jenas and Martin Keown are in agreement over the controversial penalty decision in the North London derby.

Tottenham's fine run of form came to a grinding halt against biggest rivals Arsenal on Sunday, with Jose Mourinho's men losing 2-1 despite taking the lead at the Emirates Stadium.

The defeat, however, was a controversial one with the Gunners winning the game thanks to a very debatable penalty decision against Davinson Sanchez.

Sanchez dived in on Alexandre Lacazette who missed the ball when attempting an effort on goal, leading to a collision between the two players in the box.

Despite both players appearing to make contact with each other, referee Michael Oliver and VAR official Paul Tierney decided it was an Arsenal spotkick.

That wasn't a decision Mourinho agreed with and Match of the Day pundit and former Spurs man Jenas didn't, either.

"I think it’s a poor decision from Michael Oliver," he said. "He doesn’t have a great sight of the challenge. You see as Lacazette goes to hit the ball, he misses it completely, the momentum of Lacazette kicks Sanchez, they kick each other, Lacazette misses the ball, never a penalty in a million years.

"The fact VAR didn’t overturn it, on the basis it wasn’t a ‘clear and obvious’ error, is ridiculous. It’s reckless from Lacazette as well."

Arsenal legend and fellow pundit Keown agreed, adding: "From an Arsenal perspective, they’re lucky to get a penalty there. I think they deserved it, they were far the better team on the day, though Mourinho will point to the penalty.

"To be honest, if you look at the referee’s positioning, this is where VAR can help in this situation. I wouldn’t want it as an Arsenal fan but the right decision would have been made.

"Sanchez has set himself arguably, he doesn't make the challenge and he gets kicked by Lacazette. I don’t know what Michael Oliver has seen but VAR didn’t want to overrule him and that’s where VAR, the protocol is being followed but it’s wrong because it’s not justice."
