Match of The Day pundits in disagreement over James Maddison penalty against Newcastle United

Dion Dublin and Glenn Murray were in disagreement over whether or not it was a penalty which led to the opening goal during Newcastle United's 4-0 defeat at Leicester City.

James Maddison was adjudged to have been fouled by Newcastle skipper Jamal Lascelles on the brink of half-time, with Youri Tielemans dispatching from 12-yards out.

Eddie Howe's side were still well in the game in the first-half, but Peter Banks' decision to award a spot-kick turned the tide.

Former Brighton striker Murray believes that the Magpies skipper gave the Foxes midfielder and option to go over in the box but admitted that he bought the penalty, while Dublin disagreed.

Speaking on BBC's Match of The Day, Murray said: "Yes. It is a penalty. I think [James] Maddison has bought the penalty but Lascelles gives him the option to.

"He dangles the leg and gives him the option to go over."

Dion Dublin said: "I'm in the other camp I'm afraid. I don't think it's a penalty.

"Yes, Lascelles has put his leg there but I believe the leg of Maddison has gone into Lascelles' leg. We're at opposite ends with that I'm afraid.

"I think no. I agree with you he's bought it and he's bought it well.

"The referee is always going to give it but I personally think he's on his way down."

To which Murray responded: "I don't think he has [On Maddison going into Lascelles]. I think you can tell the way Lascelles pulls his leg away like 'I haven't touched him'.

"I think that's a tell tale sign for me. He just gives him the option and when you give an attacking player an option to go over a leg in the box he's going to take it."
