Match of the Day pundit singles out Liverpool star who 'can't afford to have an off day'

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has followed on from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp by singling out Joel Matip for praise.

The Reds boss, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, branded the signing of Matip as "one of the best pieces of business" he has done since arriving at the club.

Matip started in Liverpool 's latest Premier League victory over Sheffield United on Saturday , and Wright, speaking on Saturday night's Match of the Day, believes the centre-back was brilliant at Bramall Lane.

“He has [been hugely influential] and he signed a new contract this month and you know the front guys will get the plaudits but it’s performances like this.

“People like Matip and Van Dijk, they can’t afford to have off days like the forwards did today.

“In defence he was absolutely brilliant. And when he didn’t have the option to pass it forward he just ran it forward with confidence. Brilliant play. He was absolutely brilliant today.

“Obviously people always talk about Virgil and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and [Andy] Robertson but today he was brilliant.”
