Match of the Day pundit pinpoints Man City's 'shining light' after FA Cup win

Phil Foden is the one player who has been the 'shining light' for Manchester City in recent weeks.

That is the view of former Arsenal and England star Alex Scott, who was very impressed with the City academy graduate during their win over Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup.

City looked close to being on the receiving end of a cup upset when Alfie May gave the League Two side the lead, but three goals from Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres secured the win for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The strike from Foden at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium was his second in the FA Cup and ninth across all competitions this season.

Scott, who worked as a pundit for the BBC’s coverage of Saturday night’s game, was full of admiration for Foden, and has credited the club’s impressive form over Christmas and New Year in part to the 20-year-old.

“Even in the first-half, he was City’s shining light and he has been for the last couple of weeks,” said Scott.

“He’s been that important part in that midfield that they need, the creativity, and he’s becoming such an important part of this Manchester City midfield.

“You always want him to get on the ball, make something happen, find his team-mates, he’s always trying to play forward. Throughout the whole game, he showed his quality.

“He really deserved to get a goal, we’re seeing him time and time again in the past few weeks, ghosting into this position and getting on the end of it and to be City’s top scorer at the moment. Shining light for me is Phil Foden.”
