Match of the Day pundit makes Paul Pogba claim about Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright believes Bruno Fernandes could encounter the same problems as Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

Fernandes impressed, without being able to create a goal or assist, on his United debut against Wolves after arriving in a January transfer from Sporting Lisbon.

His signing comes as a boost for the United midfield — which is currently without both Pogba and Scott McTominay through injury, while Nemanja Matic missed the 0-0 draw with Wolves through suspension.

But Wright claimed on the BBC highlights show Fernandes, despite being heavily involved from the off in a United shirt, needs more players around him to shine at Old Trafford. He compared him to Pogba.

He said: "You look at those stats (Fernandes came top in n shots, shots on target, passes and passes in opposition half) and it's the same as Paul Pogba, he needs something in front of him and somebody to run onto things.

"If they are going to keep playing like that, he is going to slip into that ordinary category as well."

Wright and fellow pundit Alan Shearer also criticised Anthony Martial's performance in the Wolves stalemate. The striker failed to have a shot in the game, after being snuffed out by the visitors' defence.

"It's three consecutive league games without a goal," noted Shearer.

"There were not enough options in there (the penalty box) and that's why."

Wright added that he believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should start Mason Greenwood as his central striker amid Martial's struggles, saying: "When you look at how Martial has played in that game, I would play him (Greenwood) now, absolutely."
