Match of the Day pundit identifies key area Chelsea must fix to maintain place in top four race

Chelsea have been suffering from mixed form in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard's side drew 2-2 against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, meaning they now have just one win in their last five league games.

That victory was important in the race to secure a top four place this season, coming as it did against Jose Mourinho's Tottenham side at Stamford Bridge.

However, more dropped points has given Manchester United the chance to close the gap when they face Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Lampard has used a number of formations so far in Chelsea's season, and Match of the Day pundit and former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer believes that the constant changing of personnel in defence is causing problems for the Blues.

"They have got injuries but they did have a nine-point cushion to fifth position in November," Sheared said on Match of the Day.

"That could go to one tomorrow [Sunday] if Manchester United win.

"They are conceding too many goals. They have conceded 39 goals and there is no consistency in there in terms of the players that are used in that back-line.

"They had a lot of possession today and they have got to start turning "

Chelsea will need to improve their points haul heading into the last 10 games of the Premier League season if they wish to hold onto fourth place in the league.

The 3-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash leaves them requiring a miracle to progress to the quarter-finals.

And they will have to tackle the Bundesliga giants without the likes of Jorginho, who has now picked up suspensions in both the Champions League and Premier League for acquiring too many yellow cards.
