Match of the Day presenter angers Ireland fans over Adam Idah remark

Irish football fans were quick to defend Norwich City striker Adam Idah, after Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan suggested Mick McCarthy cap the Corkman to, 'make sure that Ireland can keep hold of him'.

The Douglas local - who made his Premier League debut on New Years Day - scored a hat-trick for the Canaries yesterday in their 4-2 demolition of Preston North End in the FA Cup.

Cork Beo reports that following the game, the presenter said: "Apparently Mick McCarthy was there today and said after the game that he thinks he's going to have to cap him, to make sure that Ireland can keep hold of him."

This provoked a very angry response from Irish football fans, who immediately went on social media to point out that the young striker is Cork - and Irish - born and bred.

Idah was a schoolboy star on Leeside before following his dream across the Irish sea. As early as 2011, he scored a hat-trick in a league title decider for his primary school, Scoil Niocláis of Frankfield on the south side, where he is fondly remembered.

Meanwhile, Mick McCarthy was full of praise for the former College Corinthians striker after seeing the teenager's performance live in Deepdale.

Speaking on BT Sport, the Ireland boss said: "He scored a hat-trick today, and he's playing in a real competitive game. It's not a U21s, U23s, it's an FA Cup tie against a good Preston team."
