Match of the Day on why Man City are better champions than Man United in 1999 or the Invincibles

Alan Shearer and Ian Wright have hailed Pep Guardiola's Manchester City as the best team the Premier League has ever seen.

On the final episode of the Match of the Day this season, the two former strikers put the back-to-back champions ahead of Manchester United's treble-winners in 1999 and The Invincibles who went a full season unbeaten under Arsene Wenger.

The Chelsea team that set a record for points won under Jose Mourinho was not mentioned by name but Shearer and Wright both agreed that City's side beat every other opponent in the historical record of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola on what he expects from Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs next year to challenge Man City

"Best team the Premier League has ever seen," said Shearer. "There's that treble team at Manchester United and the Invincibes at Arsenal, but standards wise this is the best we've seen."

Last season, City set new records for points won in a season as they broke the 100-point mark and for wins in a single league campaign.

Prior to their victory over Brighton to confirm their defence of the title, only Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho had succeeded in retaining the Premier League, with United and Chelsea, respectively.

Guardiola expanded this elite group of manager into a trio by leading City to another title, and potentially a domestic treble if they are able to beat Watford in the FA Cup.

They had already won the Carabao Cup against Chelsea at Wembley prior to beating Liverpool to the Premier League title.

"I do [agree], to be honest," said ex-Arsenal striker Wright. "What they've done, the standards they've set, it's unprecedented.

"People point figures at what they've sent but the fact is you've got to motivate those players to play and they've done it."
