Matalan makes chief commercial officer redundant

Matalan has made its chief commercial office redundant.

The Liverpool-headquartered company said the role was being axed following a review by interim chief executive Nigel Oddy.

As a result, James Brown has stepped down as a director and left the business with immediate effect.

Mr Brown had been in the role since September 2020, having first worked for Matalan from 2001 to 2006.

He started his career at Marks & Spencer and has also worked for Littlewoods, Sainsbury's and Argos.

The news comes after the founder of Matalan stepped down as chairman in September to make a bid for the retail chain after it was put up for sale.

John Hargreaves founded the Liverpool-headquartered company in 1985 and only returned as chairman in July after executive chair Steve Johnson stepped down.

Mr Oddy joined the company as interim CEO on October 3 having previously been the CEO of New Look and chief executive of The Range.

He has also held roles at House of Fraser, Furnitureland, Blacks Leisure and M&S.

Matalan's revenue for its second quarter, the 13 weeks to August 27, totalled £286.4m, up from £264.7m in the same period last year.
