Mastiff who 'recently had puppies' thrown out of van and abandoned at side of the road

A Mastiff who recently had puppies is now “doing well” after being found abandoned on a layby in Bootle.

The RSPCA was notified on August 17 after a passer by claimed they saw a van pull over on Northern Perimeter Road before a dog was thrown out and the vehicle drove away.

Now named Ellie by RSPCA staff, the Mastiff was taken to the charity's Warrington based branch.

RSPCA inspector Naomi Morris told TeamDogs : “I suspect she may have been used for breeding and has now been abandoned as she is no longer useful or profitable.

“It's heart-breaking that she could well have been used as a puppy machine and then cast aside when she's served her purpose.”

Ellie will remain in the RSPCA's care for now, while officers investigate the incident further.

Kate Buckley, from the branch, said: “She's doing well and is currently in foster care with one of our staff.

“She's undergoing treatment for an ear infection and some lumps we've found on her body.”

The RSPCA is asking to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or recognises the dog to come forward and contact its appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

TeamDogs is asking if they should campaign for an Animal Offenders' Register so that those who have been convicted of mistreating animals can be prevented from being in charge of their care again.
