Masters: Tony Finau grabs clubhouse lead with stellar 64

One year after suffering a gruesome ankle injury at the Par 3 Contest on the eve of the Masters first round, Tony Finau came close to breaking multiple Masters records as he vaulted into the lead on Saturday.

Finau began his third round at 3-under par after rounds of 71 and 70, but he was on fire during his opening nine on moving day. Finau made three consecutive birdies to start his round, and dropped to 6-under on the day through eight holes with a brilliant eagle at the par-5 8th hole.

Finau missed a birdie putt at nine that would have made him the first golfer to card a 29, but made his fifth birdie of the day at the par-5 13th.

Two holes later, Finau took advantage of the par-5 15th to play Augusta National’s four longest holes at a combined five-under par for the day.

Finau’s 64 was the third of the day at The Masters, as Webb Simpson (-9) and Patrick Cantlay (-6) each recorded 64s. It’s the first time in Masters history that three golfers carded 64s on the same day.

Finau finished inside the top 10 in three of four major championships in 2018, including a T10 in his first start at Augusta National. On Sunday, Finau will have the chance to double his PGA Tour win total at the biggest event in the world.
