Masters: Phil Mickelson trolls Matt Kuchar over caddie pay controversy

Phil Mickelson slipped down the leaderboard with a second-round 73 on Friday, but the 48-year old is just a few shots off the lead at Augusta National Golf Club with 36 holes to play – and the three-time Masters champion is feeling confident.

In a delightful video filmed as Mickelson drove down Magnolia Lane to arrive at the course prior to his round, Phil needled his Saturday playing partner Matt Kuchar over his caddie pay controversy, and vowed to launch bombs down the fairway.

“I’ve got a great pairing today with Matt Kuchar. Obviously we’re not going to have any side action today because I’d probably see like .06 percent if I did win, but we’re going to have a great day.”

Kuchar, of course, was involved in controversy earlier this year after it was reported that he paid a replacement caddie just $5,000 after earning $1.29 million by winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico last November. Kuchar later promised to pay his caddie the requested amount of $50,000 after the story went viral.

Mickelson also said he’s expecting to drive the ball longer than ever before.

“Wearing all black, being aggressive. Hitting bombs. Got to 125.1 clubhead speed last night. I haven’t done that, I think, in my life.”
