Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau shared the overnight lead after the opening day at The Masters as the late starters raced to the top of the leaderboard.
A six-way tie a three under par among the early starters was soon surpassed as Koepka lead the afternoon charge at Augusta National.
Tiger Woods was part of that six-way share earlier on in Georgia, but dropped a shot to finish on two under, a score that looked good as he settled in the clubhouse.
Later on though, ask birdies popped up all over on the back nine for those in the afternoon groups, the gap looked a little more daunting for Woods and those around him.
If it looked bad for Woods, Rory McIlroy will have been even more frustrated. Five birdies helped save his scorecard from disaster, but six bogeys, two of which came in the final two holes, meant the man chasing the career Grand Slam had to settle for a one over 73.
Other British hopes struggled too. Justin Rose and Paul Casey both posting scores over par, while Matt Wallace and Eddie Pepperell finished three over and two over respectively as they made their Augusta bows.
Ian Poulter, however, continued to fly the flag late on, sharing the lead with nine players for a brief moment before he moved clear with Koepka. The American put his foot down where Poulter couldn't and the Ryder Cup hero finished two shots back of the American.
Three time champion Phil Mickelson finished just a shot back of Koepka with a birdie on the last.
