Mastermind star becomes youngest winner ever after perfect score on specialist subject

Mastermind's latest champion has smashed the records as he was crowned the youngest-ever person to win the quiz in its 49 years.

Student Jonathan Gibson, 24, from Glasgow, became the champion after bagging four points in the final and scoring a perfect 11/11 in his specialist subject - comedy song writing duo Flanders and Swann.

The intelligent contestant, who is studying a PhD in Modern History at the University of St Andrews, managed to beat the other players thanks to his general knowledge, and in turn he took home the Caithness Glass bowl.

The episode, which saw John Humphrey's final time as quizmaster, saw Jonathan choose William Pitt The Younger in his semi-finals.

Jonathan's incredible victory was a lovely touch for John, who is leaving the show after 18 years and 735 episodes.

The presenter is set to be replaced by Clive Myrie.

A regular presenter of BBC News At Six and Ten since 2010, the journalist has previously worked as a correspondent in Asia, Africa, Washington, Paris as well as Brussels.

He was also on a number of other BBC shows like Have I Got News for You and Would I Lie to You?.

Speaking about the new opportunity, he has previously said: "What a privilege it is to take on this new role. Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson formed the backdrop to my youth, and now to be at the helm is a dream come true.

"I'm excited and can't wait to get stuck in."

It has not yet been announced when Clive's episodes will air, but filming for his episodes will begin in July.
