Mastermind final features Scots quiz fanatic who died before it aired

A Scottish quiz fanatic's bid to win BBC 's Mastermind will be aired tonight - but Hamish Cameron will not be alive to see it.

The retired IT manager had made his way to the grand final of the BBC2 show - which was recorded in November.

But the 72-year-old was diagnosed with cancer just a month later before passing away last week.

His funeral is set to take place in Elgin just hours before his performance will be aired to millions of people later this evening.

The BBC had planned to postpone the show, but Hamish's family urged them to air the episode, insisting it is what he would have wanted.

The show now plans a special tribute to the quiz legend during the final.

It's not yet known how Hamish performed in the final.

The Telegraph reports on Hamish's son, Niall, as saying: "When he did the Mastermind final he said, ‘If I am not here, make sure the programme still goes out.

"It will be tough to watch, but Hamish wouldn’t want us to be sad, but to find the positives. It’s quite strange timing. But, knowing Hamish, he would see the irony in it."

He will be joined by Hamish's wife Edna, and sisters Mairi and Isla along with other family to watch the final at home following the funeral service.

Hamish first appeared on Mastermind in 1990 when Magnus Magnusson was show host and quizmaster.

He also appeared in the radio version of the show and represented Scotland internationally at quizzing and also running.

Mark Grant, another finalist on the show this evening, said: "Sometimes when you encounter people in the final, there is a frisson of competition, but he was just really nice. He was just a lovely guy".

The final of Mastermind is on BBC2 at 7.30pm.
