Mastermind contestant, 72, who died will appear in tonight's episode hours after funeral

An episode featuring a Mastermind contestant who died before it aired is set to go ahead tonight just hours after his funeral.

Quiz genius Hamish Cameron died aged 72 just months after competing in the BBC show.

But the terminally-ill star told his family before his death that he wanted the episode featuring him to be aired, regardless of whether he died before it appeared on screen.

Following his funeral today, his family and loved ones will all gather in their family home in Elgin, Moray to watch the episode.

Mr Cameron's son Niall said that his dad would have enjoyed the irony in the programme featuring him being broadcast just after his funeral.

He told the Mail Online : "When he did the Mastermind final he said 'If I am not here, make sure the programme still goes out'.

"It will be tough to watch, but Hamish wouldn’t want us to be sad, but to find the positives."

Mr Cameron managed to reach the Mastermind grand final for a second time after appearing on the show a record 17 times.

He was ill during recording in November last year.

The BBC had considered postponing the show after his death last week but his family were keen for the episode to go ahead.

Another finalist on tonight's Mastermind, Mark Grant, described him as a "lovely guy" who he'd met a "few times".

He said: "Sometimes when you encounter people in the final, there is a frisson of competition, but he was just really nice."
