Clive Myrie will replace John Humphrys as the new host of Mastermind, it was announced today (22 March).

The BBC journalist, who was recently named Best Presenter at the Royal Television Society awards, will take over Humphrys’ spot presenting the quiz show, which he has held for 18 years.

Myrie will be Mastermind’s fifth overall host and will present during its 50th anniversary next year.

Speaking about the new role, Myrie said that following in Humphrys’ footsteps was a “privilege”.

Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson formed the backdrop to my youth, and now to be at the helm is a dream come true,” he said.

BBC Director of Entertainment Kate Phillips said: “Clive will be a superb host, witty, wise and with a wicked sense of humour, he’s a consummate interrogator who also understands the fear involved when facing a barrage of questions in the spotlight.”

Filming is due to begin in July, while Humphrys’ last episodes will air in April.
