Fans of MasterChef Australia: Back To Win have taken to social media to complain about the current season as it includes some major changes to the show’s original format.
The 17th season does not include the Top 50 round (a process of challenges involving a large number of contestants which narrows down to the final 20-24 people), which has led to a number of fans decrying its absence.

“Does anyone [miss] the Top 50 this week?” a thread on Reddit began.
“[I’ve] been rewatching season four lately, and I miss the ‘Top 50 “Bootcamp’ styled week to [determine] the Top 24. [It’s given] us more depth to the contestants and we can [see] their growth before the competition started.
“I’m…not hating the new season. Great cooks, entertaining cast, nice people,” a commentator on thread wrote.
“But, the new season is lacking all the things I traditionally love about MasterChef Australia. Namely, watching kitchen amateurs do their best to impress, and then grow as cooks and people while we watch and get to know them.”
However, the main reason that season 17 does not include a Top 50 challenge is that Back to Win features past contestants, who do not need to audition.
Other fans chimed in the comments, and said that they also miss other key factors of the show including audition tapes.

Another Reddit thread by a different fan discussed the 17th season not having as many “restrictive challenges” as its predecessors.
“I fondly remember in [the] earlier seasons (back when I was still a child),” the second thread read.
“That a fair few challenges highly restricted what people were able to use or the tools in which they had to prepare the meal. Mystery box challenges come close, but I find the ‘can only use a wok to cook’ or ‘dish must use fish’ challenges to always be the most interesting to watch.”
“I want them to bring back the ‘everything mystery box’. It was always so fun to see how they could creatively cram all the ingredients into their dish in some cohesive way,” another fan wrote.
MasterChef Australia: Back to Win is currently airing on Channel 10 and 10Play on Sunday to Wednesday.
