Incoming MasterChef Australia: Back To Win contestant and season one punter Andre Ursini has dropped a major confession ahead of season 17’s premiere.
ICYMI, a bunch of MasterChef Australia contestants from season one up to season 16 will be returning to the kitchen for another shot at MasterChef glory.
One of the folks who will be vying for that highly sought-after title is season one’s Andre Ursini!
For folks who need a refresher on Ursini’s MasterChef Australia journey, the South Australian first appeared on the show when he was just a 28-year-old project manager. While he didn’t win his season — ultimately placing seventh behind winner Julie Goodwin — he did leave the show to become an award-winning business owner and restaurateur.
While Ursini has been serving up real good dishes on the business side of things, he admits that he may be a “little rusty” ahead of his return to the MasterChef kitchen.
“I haven’t cooked in a long time,” the 44-year-old admitted to The Sunday Mail.
“As I developed these businesses, it took me away from the kitchen. I delegate a lot, it’s been less hands-on. It’s more about managing people and numbers.
“Now I just want to concentrate on cooking again and have some fun – that’s my main agenda.”

Reflecting on his upcoming competition — which features icons like season four’s Audra Morrice, season 16’s Darrsh Clarke and season six’s Laura Sharrad — Ursini also admits that he hasn’t been keeping up with the show. However, he did notice that a lot has changed since season one.
“I haven’t really watched the show in recent years, so I don’t understand a lot of the challenges. A lot of them didn’t exist in my season,” Ursini continued.
“But this is going to be a great celebration of SA, with Poh [Ling Yeow] as one of the judges as well. I’m really proud to do it and be a part of that.”
As someone who’s watched most seasons of MasterChef Australia, it’s really interesting (and to be dramatic, beautiful) to see how the show blossomed into an Aussie TV staple.
Can’t wait to see what bombshells, twists and wholesome moments MasterChef Australia: Back To Win brings us when it drops!
MasterChef Australia: Back To Win premieres Monday, April 28 at 7.30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
