Mastercard severs ties with Pornhub after discovering illegal material

Mastercard is ending its relationship with adult website Pornhub after finding evidence of illegal material on the platform.

The credit card company announced earlier this week it was investigating allegations of child abuse and sexual assault videos on Pornhub, but “confirmed the presence of illegal material” on Thursday, according to New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.

Mastercard said it would be ending its use on other websites as well, though it did not specify which ones.

“Today, the use of our cards at Pornhub is being terminated,” the company said in a statement. “Our investigation over the past several days has confirmed violations of our standards prohibiting unlawful content on their site. As a result, and in accordance with our policies, we instructed the financial institutions that connect the site to our network to terminate acceptance. In addition, we continue to investigate potential illegal content on other websites to take the appropriate action.”

Pornhub has repeatedly denied that it hosts illegal material.
