Hat makers from around Australia and the world have converged in Adelaide for an international millinery convention that puts colourful and fascinating creations on show to the public.
More than 100 delegates for the "Hats Off to Adelaide" Millinery Convention Trade Show are expected to attend the event, which also offers masterclasses and competitions.
It is an opportunity to learn from the best, with some expert milliners holding a lifelong passion for the craft, such as 88-year-old Gwenda Baker.
"I've been working as a milliner for 70 years," she said.
"I just love it. It's so creative and everybody loves a hat."
Event convener Lorraine Gill, a millinery lecturer at TAFE SA, said the craft was a labour of love.
"Making a hat can take months, depending on the design and materials," Ms Gill said.
"It takes patience and muscle because you have to block it over the blocks and pull hard."
Like many others at the convention, Ms Gill is also a hat lover.
"Back in the 40s and 50s you didn't go out of the door without a hat. I'd like that to come back," she said.
The convention runs until July 15 and welcomes all hat enthusiasts, from millinery beginners to masters of the field.
