Massive zip wires across Cardiff Bay could launch this summer

Proposals for a zip wire attraction across Cardiff Bay have been revealed.

The two planned zip wires would accommodate 48 people per hour and operate between July 9 and January 5, if Cardiff council approves the scheme.

These wires would go from the roof of St David's Hotel, heading across the water before landing in front of the city's Norwegian Church, WalesOnline reports.

Thrill-seekers would launch themselves off the hotel from a height of almost 150ft, along a 1,180ft-long wire down to the waterfront.

The event would run across the summer and during weekends from October to January, except in school holidays when it would open seven days a week.

Zip Now, which is behind the application, has estimated a total of 65,000 people would visit the attraction across the operational dates.

A planning application says: "The zip wire will start from a temporary, purpose-built platform on the roof of the St David’s hotel.

"Two zip wires will take riders on a fast aerial journey over 350m to land on a 12m platform in Britannia Park - at an exciting but safe gradient of 7.5%.

"From the launch platform and throughout the flight, riders enjoy unique views of the location and much of the Cardiff skyline.

"Visitors will enjoy watching the event and the hotel should benefit from friends and family or riders using the hotel for accommodation and refreshments."

The launch platform would be located on the eastern most corner of the roof of St David’s Hotel.

Friends or family wanting to watch the riders would have to find vantage points in the Bay.

Riders would not be able to take part if they are under eight years old, are pregnant or have a heart condition, and must be between 3ft 11in and 6ft 10in tall and not weigh more than 18st 12lb.

Zip Now says it will employ a team of around 25 to manage the event on site.

The company held a zip wire event within Archbishop’s Park, Lambeth during the summers of 2017 and 2018, and hope to do so again this year.
