Massive whale carcass sat decomposing on popular Welsh beach

The badly decomposed carcass of a whale has washed up on a beach in Pembrokeshire.

Visitors to the Freshwater West near Castlemartin discovered the enormous creature lying on the sands.

The decaying remains have attracted complaints from some walkers who claim it is giving off putrid odours.

Other marine mammals, including a large adult seal and a pup, have also been found washed up on the beach in recent weeks.

Freshwater West is a popular walking and surfing beach within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

It served as a filming location for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with many visitors still flocking to the beach to see the " grave" of Dobby the house elf .

Sandra Manwaring discovered the whale lying on the sand on Saturday morning.

"My husband and I were walking across on the Saturday morning and there was this big white object," Sandra, 50, said.

"It looked like a hessian sand bag and we were thinking how could we get it off the beach.

"As we got nearer it was clear that it was bigger than that, we worked out that it must be a whale."

Sandra said the whale was about the length of a minibus, and nearly four foot wide along some areas of the body.

"It was very white and you could see strips inside it like thick muscle or ligament," Sandra said. "It was very badly decomposed."

A photograph of the whale Sandra posted onto a community Facebook group attracted complaints from some claiming the carcass is creating a bad odour.

These are some of the strangest things that have washed up on beaches:

"There was a little bit of a smell but some have been saying it is absolutely stinking" she said.

Sandra said this is the third time she has spotted dead wildlife on the shore at Freshwater in recent weeks.

An adult seal and a pup were both seen on the beach recently but have since been removed.

Freshwater West is managed by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, but the removal of the whale remains will be undertaken by the local authority.

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said the authority was "looking at the logistics" of having the whale removed.

He added work was being done to confirm its location on the beach and identify the equipment required to get it moved.
