Massive turnout at St Anne's Park as 'thousands form human chain' in protest at huge housing development

There was a massive turn out at St Anne's Park on Sunday morning as people formed a human chain in protest at huge housing development plans near the grounds.

Residents joined up together bright and early to rally against the controversial plans to develop 657 apartments in Raheny.

The meeting, organised by campaign group I Love St Anne's, saw protesters link arms around the grounds of the sport pitches at Sybil Hill Road.

The group were completely blown away by the support and took to Facebook to thank everybody who came.

They said: "Wow, what a turn out this morning for our Hands Around the Lands rally. We were honestly completely overwhelmed to see the numbers of people who gave up their Sunday morning to register their support for this campaign. We could barely get everyone through the Sybil Hill gates."

They added: "We expected a single line of people, spaced carefully along the perimeter of the St. Paul's lands - instead, we had a line 2 and 3 people deep, along the Main Avenue, the arboretum and pitches 1 & 2 (where it was VERY muddy). We do not have an exact count but it was definitely in the thousands. Well done all."

Last year, a proposal for 500 homes on the same site was quashed after High Court proceedings began.

An Bord Pleanala had initially granted permission for the proposal which included 400 apartments and 100 houses, but later told the High Court they had "made an error" in granting permission and agreed to quash the permission.
