Massive tailbacks as hundreds flock to the beach for bank holiday

Queues formed on the Coastal Road going towards Ainsdale beach this morning, where gridlocked traffic halted cars.

Hundreds of people flocked to our region's coastal areas to make the most of the sunny weather on Bank Holiday Monday.

Long tailbacks could be seen extending along Shore Road and the Coastal Road as people wait to get onto the beach.

Visitors have also been queuing to get into the Formby beach car park since this morning, as spaces quickly filled up.

Cars full of people were turned away before midday as families flocked to the area to try and make the most of the sunshine.

The popular beauty spot often proves popular with visitors on sunny days, especially during half term and the summer holidays.

And with foreign travel still off the cards for many of us, it seems Formby and Ainsdale are proving especially popular this bank holiday weekend.

Visitors also arrived on foot at Formby beach, with cars forced to turn around after being told the car park was full.

Yesterday saw dozens of drivers issued with parking tickets in the area. Merseyside Police were made aware of the situation and issued 70 separate traffic offence reports for parking offences around the Formby area yesterday (Saturday).

Officers also remained at Formby Beach today after a 20-year-old man was left fighting for his life in an incident which took place last night.

Earlier today, Merseyside Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man was in a critical but stable condition after the horror attack on Sunday.

In a further update this afternoon, a police spokesperson said the man is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The two other victims, aged 20 and 16, are described as being in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
