Massive sinkhole opens up on Scots path amid stormy weather

Shocking pictures show a massive sinkhole that has opened up on a popular Scots coastal path amid stormy weather.

A large section of the walkway in West Wemyss, Fife, gave way on Thursday, February 4, after the region was battered with torrential downpours.

The Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (FCCT) is asking visitors to avoid the area while emergency repair works get underway to fill in the huge crater.

Coastal erosion is being blamed for the walkway disappearing just centimeters away from the shoreline.

Workers have temporarily closed a section of the walkway between Dysart and West Wemyss.

The trust said: “Due to coastal erosion, significant damage has taken place on the stretch of the Fife Coastal Path at West Wemyss harbour.

“The path is closed to public access from Edington Place (Dysart) to West Wemyss.

“The land manager has arranged for remedial works to take place and therefore walkers are advised to avoid the area until further notice.”
