via Reuters

A massive sinkhole opened up in Italian capital, Rome, swallowing at least six cars and forcing 20 families to flee their homes.

Pictures showed a 30ft-deep ground hole which collapsed around 5.30pm in the Balduina district.

Dramatic images show the extent of the road damage after the surface spontaneously crumbled.

Two fire squads were scrambled to the scene in the north west of Rome, ordering the evacuation of around 20 households as a precautionary measure.

Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi who visited the site, confirmed that no one was injured.

she also stressed that the collapse occurred at an active construction site, and that the situation is under control.
