Massive rupture to water main forces rural road to close

A second bridge on the outskirts on Balfron has been forced to close after a massive fracture of a water pipe which carries supplies from Loch Katrine to Glasgow.

Ballochruin bridge is out of bounds as Scottish Water carry out repairs to a section of the pipeline which burst there earlier this month.

The structure, on the Ballochruin Road, C54, is closed after one of the large cast-iron water main pipes fractured.

The road runs from Balfron Station to Boquhan and crosses the Endrick at Ballochruin bridge. The pipe burst, adjacent to the bridge, has caused the road surface to subside.

The pipeline carries water from Loch Katrine, near Aberfoyle, all the way to Glasgow.

Scottish Water says that engineers are working on a repair, however the route still remains closed. A spokesperson said: “Scottish Water engineers have isolated a burst on a water main off Ballochruin Road, near Balfron, and are planning a repair to be carried out as soon as possible.

“A stretch of Ballochruin Road has been closed to traffic and local diversions put in place in liaison with Stirling Council to enable this work to be carried out. We apologise for any inconvenience to local road users and thank them for their patience and understanding. We will complete the repair work and re-open the road as quickly as we can.”

One eagle-eyed resident who lives nearby was able to capture photographs of the massive rupture to the water pipe.

The snaps show a large section of the pipeline missing and heavy machinery on site to carry out the repairs.

It’s understood that the work could continue for up to a further two weeks or more to complete.
