Massive RAF aircraft lands on Cefn Sidan beach in Pembrey

A massive RAF aircraft has been spotted landing on a west Wales beach.

The Atlas C.1 (A400M) could be seen touching down on Cefn Sidan, in Pembrey, on Thursday during a training exercise.

The huge aircraft from RAF Brize Norton was being used as part of a training exercise which saw crews practising beach and rough strip landings, an RAF spokesman confirmed.

The Atlas C.1 (A400M)  entered operational service with the Royal Air Force in 2014 and provides tactical airlift and strategic oversize lift capabilities.

It is based at RAF Brize Norton (Andy West)

It can operate at altitudes up to 40,000ft, as well as offering impressive low-level capability.

It will accommodate as many as 116 fully-equipped troops, vehicles, helicopters (including a Chinook) or combinations of vehicles, pallets and personnel, up to a payload of 37 tonnes.

Two pilots, as well as a weapons systems operator, operate the aircraft.

It's not the first time that an enormous RAF aircraft has been spotted landing on the Carmarthenshire beach.

Last year a C-130 Hercules landed at Pembrey beach as part of a training exercise.

A spokesman for Pembrey Airport said at the time: "From time to time the RAF have training exercises here to train their pilots to land on the beach.

"They probably carry out training exercises down here about five times a year."
