Massive queues outside Primark in Cardiff city centre as people shop on first post-lockdown weekend

There were massive queues outside Primark in Cardiff city centre on Saturday as shoppers hit the high street on the first weekend after Wales' 17-day fire-break lockdown.

A huge queue of shoppers stretched from the bargain retail store in Queen Street, spiralled down a nearby alleyway, and reached as far as Tim Horton's coffee shop.

One person reported seeing the queue as far back as McDonald's earlier on Saturday morning.

A bystander described Queen Street as "very busy" and overheard a Primark worker express their dread at the size of the queue on their way to work.

"I was speaking to two women who said they were teachers so Saturday and Sunday is the only time they can go out shopping. They couldn't understand why it was so crazy," the onlooker said.

Primark is only allowing customers to enter the store through the entrance on Queen Street and shoppers must exit through the door to St David's shopping centre.

At lunchtime on Saturday the queue started outside the shop and followed down a nearby alleyway leading to the Trespass store. The queue then turns back on itself, creating three rows of people, before stretching past the shops up to Boots.

The shop re-opened on Monday to massive queues of customers waiting however scenes on Saturday far outweighed those of Monday as more shoppers hit the town.

Cardiff's Christmas markets also re-opened this week as well as Christmas At The Castle, which is replacing Winter Wonderland this year.

On Saturday large crowds of people were seen walking through Queen Street as well as along The Hayes following a one-way system which is in place.
