A massive power cut in the West End of Glasgow has plunged homes and businesses into darkness.

The blackout, affective five postcode areas, occured shortly before midday on Thursday.

A local resident said: "Even the traffic lights on Great Western Road are out. Shops are all shut and everything.

"It's like the 1970s."

Supply is expected to be restored by 2pm.

SP Energy Networks confirmed: "There is a power cut affecting the G11, G12, G13, G3 and G71 postcode areas of Glasgow.

"We had no advance warning of this and first became aware of it at 11:54am.

"Our control centre will attempt to restore electricity supply remotely, and we will also send our next available engineers to the area to find and fix the fault as quickly and as safely as possible."
