Massive power cut after cable fire in Scots town leaves homes with no electricity

Dozens of residents in a Scots town have been without power for almost 24 hours following reports of an underground electrical fire.

A number of properties in Penicuik are still experiencing the power outage as engineers work to repair damaged cables buried under Carlops Road.

Several homes were plunged into darkness at around 10pm on Tuesday with the outage lasting throughout the night and into Wednesday morning.

SP Energy Networks have said that while electricity has been restored to some addresses in the area, others remain off the grid while emergency repair works are carried out.

They hope the fault will be repaired by 8pm on Wednesday.

A statement on their website read: “There is a power cut in the EH26 postcode area of Penicuik, affecting properties in Carlops Road and surrounding streets.

“Our team has managed to restore power to a number of properties in the area and are still working to repair electrical equipment on Carlops Road affecting the rest of our customers without power.

“We now expect all power to be back on as quickly and as safely as possible by 8pm.

“We will update this message if this information changes. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”
