A massive police search was sparked by reports that a body had been buried there years ago.
Officers began digging up land in the wood on Intake Lane, on the border of Bickerstaffe and Rainford, last week.
Concern spread through the local community as the reason behind the search was not disclosed by Merseyside Police.
Forensic officers were seen working inside the large cordon as barrels of dirt and soil were removed from the area.
Tents were put up in the woods and people were asked to stay away from the area while the search was completed.
After a number of days, the force have now confirmed the reason for the search.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said that it had been reported that a body had be historically buried on the land.
The force said: "We can confirm Merseyside Police officers have today, Thursday 26 th November, finished a search of land near Intake Lane on the border of Bickerstaffe and Rainford.
"Officers were responding to reports suggesting a body had been historically buried on the land.
"An extensive search of the area has been carried out over the past seven days but nothing has been located."

The statement went on to say that the search was not confirmed to any historical investigations being carried out by Merseyside Police.
Earlier on Thursday, Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO that the search was not linked to the murder of Helen McCourt in 1988.
