An area of the city centre is closed off by a massive police cordon this evening as emergency services remain at the scene.
The cordon is close to American Pizza Slice and the neighbouring Subway restaurant on Whitechapel close to the Metrquarter shopping centre.
A police spokesperson told the ECHO that the force was dealing with an "ongoing incident."
Three police vehicles and an ambulance are at the scene.
The cordon stretches across the front of numerous businesses, although there is no indication any are directly involved in the incident.
The footpath on Whitechapel appears to be closed to pedestrians but the road appears to be open at this stage.
Offices were inspecting the pavement outside a newsagent on Whitechapel.
The ECHO has approached police for more information on the incident.
