Massive oak tree crashes down close to historic Sudley House

A massive oak tree has fallen next to Aigburth's Sudley House.

The tree, believed to be one of the site's ancient oaks, took roots and tarmac with it as it fell in the opposite direction of the house.

Michaela Heaton, 55, discovered the fallen tree after getting a Covid-19 test in the area yesterday.

The woman, who tested negative, has long loved Sudley House and the ancient trees that border it.

She told the ECHO: "I've been going there since I was about eight or nine to have picnics. I go there quite regularly, but with Covid I haven't been as much."

Michaela and husband Terence visited the site and were shocked to see the tree.

The Halewood woman said: "It is so close to the house, if it had went the other way it would've been quite dramatic - it's massive."

The huge tree fell away from the house, and in the fall appears to have damaged another tree.

Michaela, 55, said: "You can go up and touch the roots, the tarmac is still attached to them."

A barrier is present around the roots of the tree where tarmac has been pulled up.

The Liverpool ECHO has reached out to Liverpool City Council and National Museums Liverpool for comment.

The fallen tree features engravings of love hearts from years gone by, which Michaela said she could see when she took a closer look.

She said: "It made me feel very sad as I've been going there for 50 years."

Michaela said: "It must've made a massive crash, it's bigger than the tree that fell on Dovedale Road."
