Massive multi-million pound recycling centre to open in Bristol

A huge multi-million pound recycling centre is opening in South Bristol on April 8.

The Ashton Vale plant will be a zero waste to landfill site and will handle 150,000 tonnes of waste a year.

The recycling centre has 26 conveyors to move waste around and separate walkways for workers to safely travel around the site.

Investigation launched after Frenchay car fire spreads to elderly woman's bungalow

“We are very excited to see it up and running,” said Amy McCormack, director of ETM Recycling, which built the centre.

The company had to apply for a bespoke permit from the environment agency to handle the waste at the new plant.

“People have constantly been asking us when it’s going to open,” added Amy.

“It is a massive investment for us but one that we feel will be a huge benefit to the city of Bristol.”

Recycling - What goes where

But building such a big recycling centre in the city has not been without its challenges.

ETM had to completely redevelop their existing site, which meant demolishing offices and building new surrounding walls and concrete floors.

Amy said: “We believe our position in South Bristol is key… so we didn’t want to move to a new site.

“This meant that we had to continue to operate and process waste whilst building the new plant on a very tight site, which was hugely challenging.

“It has been a big learning curve for all of us, but now it’s almost there we can’t wait to see it in all its glory.”

A total of £4million has been spent building the recycling plant, which will process construction and demolition waste, and commercial and industrial waste.
