Massive motorway queues after crash on major road between van and two cars

Drivers are stuck in long tailbacks on the M57 due to a crash blocking a large section of the Knowsley Expressway.

It is believed that a van and two cars were involved in a collision on the Knowsley Expressway shortly after 5pm this afternoon.

The vehicles were travelling southbound towards Halewood , close to the Tarbock Island junction, at the time of the crash.

North West Motorway Police confirmed the motorway closure on Twitter and asked drivers to avoid the area if possible.

They said: "We are currently dealing with a multiple RTC on southbound Knowsley Expressway, traffic is very heavy coming from the M57, avoid the area if possible."

Travel site INRIX also said: "A5300  Knowsley  Expressway Southbound blocked, very slow traffic due to accident, a van and two cars involved from M62 J6 (Tarbock Island, Tarbock) to A562  Speke  Road (Hale Bank)."

The road closure is causing long delays in the area with some drivers reporting being stuck for almost two hours.

On Twitter, @HayleyMakesIt said: "Got a baby in the car, been sat here hour And a half.

"I appreciate takes time but got no water for baby."

It is not yet clear whether anyone was injured in the crash but a number of people travelling towards the city said that emergency vehicles, including ambulances, were attempting to make their way to the scene.

Around an hour after the crash, officers took to Twitter again to tell drivers not to turn against the traffic and try to exit the motorway via the Tarbock Island slip road.

They said: "Traffic stopped M57 towards A5300, we are watching vehicles turn against the flow of stationary traffic in order to turn and join the slip for Tarbock Island.

"You are all on CCTV, our advice would be to stop,be patient, what you are doing is extremely dangerous and illegal."
