'Massive impact' - Bristol City starlet earns rave reviews for his debut

Amid a frantic and busy summer of player acquisition and trading, the signing of Owura Edwards barely caused a ripple beyond those in the know at Ashton Gate.

City agreed a modest compensation fee for the 18-year-old forward from League Two Newport County after he impressed while on trial for the Under-18s towards the end of last season.

As part of their burgeoning relationship with Bath City, the Robins have designated that Edwards - the younger sibling of 20-year-old Opi - will spend the 2019/20 season with the Romans to build his understanding and experience of senior football.

After his debut was delayed due to issues over his international clearance, as Edwards' scholarship at Newport ran into August, the 18-year-old finally made his first appearance for Bath in their 3-0 win over Hampton & Richmond on Tuesday.

And he made an instant impact, impressing with his pace and dribbling speed attacking the Hampton & Richmond defence at will through the middle and from the flank.

"There was an exciting young lad out there," said Bath City manager Jerry Gill to Somerset Live. "I thought Owura Edwards was terrific.

"He's got the ability to go past people with real pace and energy. He's a dynamic player.

"I encourage him to get at players. They're young players, they'll be inconsistent at times. It's important to encourage them and what they're good at."

Edwards completed the full 90 minutes, starting the first half in attack but moving to the right-hand side of midfield for the second and constantly attacking his full-back - almost as a old-style winger.

"He manipulates the ball a little bit differently to Opi as well. He's had a massive impact on the game" Gill added.

"I'm singling out players but I thought that was an all-round, good team performance."
