Massive grass fire engulfs Scots hill as shocking pictures show flames spreading across 1km of moorland

A massive grass fire has destroyed at least 1km of moorland in Dumfries and Galloway after emergency services battled to extinguish the blaze.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze shortly after 3.30pm on Tuesday, June 1, before rushing to the A712 at New Galloway.

At the height of the inferno, 30 firefighters battled to dampen down the flames which continued to spread across the hillside.

Shocking pictures captured by Galloway Mountain Rescue Team show the full extent of the fire which is now said to be ‘contained’.

Whilst no injuries have been reported, the damage done to wildlife in the area will be extensive.

A statement from the rescue team said: “Galloway Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Tuesday evening at 7.50pm and again yesterday morning at 5am to assist Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with a large wildfire.

“The team deployed their Mavic 2 Enterprise Drone to look at the extent of the fire helping the fire service determine where the fire could spread to by tracking and mapping fire patterns and locating hotspots.

“The wildfire is contained and being monitored.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “We were alerted at 3.33pm on Tuesday, June 1 to reports of grass on fire near to the A712 at New Galloway.

“Operations Control mobilised six appliances and 30 firefighters extinguished an area of grass on fire which covered approximately 1,000 metres.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
