Massive fire sends plumes of smoke above Dublin as motorists warned of impaired vision on M50

A massive scrap yard fire has sent plumes of black smoke above Dublin, hindering vision on the M50.

Up to 40 cars went up in flames at the yard in Ballymun, with Dublin Fire Brigade responding to the call shortly after lunctime.

Five fire engines and a water tanker are currently at the seen.

The smoke is visible in many parts of the capital, with motorists being advised that vision on the M50 close to the fire is impaired.

Residents who live in the area have been urged to close their windows and stay inside while the fire is brought under control, Dublin Live reports.

Social media was set alight with pictures of the dramatic smoke, with initial fears over the source of the fire, due to its proximity to Dublin Airport.

Units from the Dublin Fire Brigade are still at the scene.

It is not yet known how the fire started.
